CLIENT-CENTERED MENTAL HEALTH CARE
About Me
I am board-certified in Psychiatry, Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, and Forensic Psychiatry, with over 30 years of professional experience in both private and public sectors.
I attended Howard University College of Medicine. I did my residency training at The University of Colorado, University of Illinois, and Yale University.
I moved to Nantucket Island from Connecticut this past year to occupy the home that my parents bought in 1984, with the plan to continue practicing psychiatry with a limited number of patients, to whom I can provide high quality and unhurried attention. For this reason, I have chosen to operate on a fee-for service basis.
I strive to provide empathic listening, validation, and treatment that helps clients identify obstacles and strategize toward accomplishing their goals in a straight-forward and effective manner.
My Services
ALL SESSIONS ARE VIA TELE-PSYCHIATRY
Psychiatric Diagnostic Evaluation
After an initial free phone consultation and with your informed consent, our work together begins with a comprehensive diagnostic evaluation that includes discussing your current symptoms and my obtaining information about your physical health as well as emotional and behavioral issues that impact your functioning.
In some cases, I may request that you permit me to obtain past treatment records or communicate with other providers who are involved in your care.
I believe that a thorough assessment is essential as the basis for developing a treatment plan that clearly identifies your goals and my recommendations.
Diagnostic visits are typically scheduled for 60-70 minutes.
Psychotherapy
I strongly believe that "talk therapy" is essential to mental health care. I do not see patients for medication only.
My education and clinical experience include extensive use of both insight-oriented and cognitive therapy modalities.
At present, I primarily work with adolescents (age 16-18) and adults on an individual basis. However, I am also willing to work with families and couples.
Psychotherapy sessions are typically 45-50 minutes.
Medication Management
I prescribe psychiatric medication(s) for some, though by no means all, of my patients when, in my clinical judgement, medication is warranted as an element of the treatment plan on which we agree.
I obtain your informed consent, based on discussing benefits and risks of the prescribed medication as well as consequences of choosing to decline medication.
My working with you is NOT dependent on your decision about medication.
Medication management entails regularly scheduled follow-up visits with a focus on the symptoms medication is intended to address, review of any bothersome side effects, and discussion of relevant changes in your life/functioning.
These visits are typically15-20 minutes in duration.
